Metronidazole Gel USP, 1%

  • Metronidazole Gel USP, 1% is bioequivalent (similar) to the brand Metrogel® 1%, another product used to treat rosacea. Both products contain the active ingredient metronidazole and are applied topically, or to the skin.
  • Metronidazole Gel USP, 1% is used to treat inflammatory lesions of rosacea and is a higher potency version of Metronidazole Gel USP, 0.75%.

Indication

Metronidazole Gel, 1% is indicated for the topical treatment of the inflammatory lesions of rosacea.

Important Safety Information

  • Metronidazole gel should not be used by patients who are allergic to metronidazole or any ingredient in metronidazole gel. Avoid contact of metronidazole gel with the eyes as it may cause tearing. Metronidazole gel should be used with caution in patients with evidence of, or a history of, blood dyscrasia, and with patients taking blood thinning agents as they may experience prolonged prothrombin times. Metronidazole gel treatment should be discontinued if numbness or paresthesia of any extremity should occur.
  • In controlled clinical studies, the most commonly reported adverse events in patients treated with metronidazole gel were nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection, and headache. Other adverse experiences reported when using topical metronidazole include skin irritation, transient redness, metallic taste, tingling or numbness of the extremities and nausea.
